The Summer Reading Program is Going Strong in 2008

The Cactus Eaters: Reading by Author Dan White

Author Dan White regales the audience with stories from his exploits on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). His humorous book details his quest to through-hike the PCT, which stretches the length of California from the Mexican border to the Canadian.

A large crowd turned out to see Jim Jones and the Sunset Syncopators perform music from the 20's and 30's. Jones accompanied the music with narration, putting the music in its historical context.

Summer Hours at Malaga Cove

Just a reminder that the summer hours at Malaga Cove Library will temporarily change for eight weeks. Starting on July 9th and going until August 27th the hours on WEDNESDAY ONLY will change to 1pm - 9pm. This is in conjunction with the Summer Concert Series put on by the Malaga Cove Business and Professional Association.

Come on by! Enjoy the music and stop in to the library for Summer Reading fun!!

Come and join the Miraleste Book Club! Meeting are held the 2nd Saturday of every month at 1:00 PM at Miraleste Library. July's meeting will feature a discussion about The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. Books, conversation, food, and friends; it's a great way to spend an afternoon.

The Appraisal Event at Malaga Cove.

Bonham and Butterfield's Auction House came to the library to do on-site appraisals and what a great day we had! We learned a lot this first time around and will making some changes for our next event, but overall the whole experience was a fantastic one. Look for B&B to come back again next year!

The Palos Verdes Library District (PVLD) will close on February 11th for system upgrades and to launches a new PVLD website.

Our holiday music is sponsored by the Malaga Cove and

Miraleste Library Advisory Committees.

December 4th - Miraleste Library welcomes the Miraleste Intermediate School's Vocal Ensemble for a selection of favorites! Concert will begin at 7:00pm but please try and come early to get parking. We encourage carpooling!

December 7th - Malaga Cove Library will host the Palos Verdes Intermediate School Pep Band! The concert will begin in the park right next to the library and then will move to the gallery for refreshments. We will start at 3:45pm and be sure to bring a chair for the park.

December 12th - Malaga Cove Library welcomes a Brass Ensemble of students from Amuse. We will begin at 4:30pm in the gallery and will have refreshments afterwards.

Santa is coming to Malaga Cove!

Join us on December 20th to welcome a visit from Santa during the Volunteer Storytime hour. We will begin at 4PM and refreshments will be served. Hope to see you there!

Shifting, shifting, shifting....

If you've been to the Malaga Cove Library lately, you'd see that the non-fiction area is going through a little up keep. We are pulling out the children's non-fiction books from the adult non-fiction books and creating a new children's non-fiction area.

We are working with the Young Reader's Librarians to weed the entire collection and create a more current and user friendly selection. The staff has been amazing at shifting and moving the books, getting rid of the older titles as we go and generally cleaning up the whole collection! We hope to have the new children's non-fiction area ready soon so come by and have a look.

Kudos to the whole staff - Dawn, Rudy, Marcia, Kendel, Jesse and Susan!!

TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY!!!!

The International "Talk Like A Pirate Day" is September 19th and the Miraleste and Malaga Cove branches will be observing this exciting day! The week of the 17th to the 21st we will have coloring sheets, puzzle pages, word searches, pirate biographies to read and other fun games available for the kids. On the OFFICIAL "Talk Like A Pirate Day" we will be dressing up and having some fun talking like pirates!!

We hope you'll take a minute to join in the fun when you are at the library and maybe even stop by to check out if anyone can actually "TAlk Like A Pirate"!

The End of Summer....

The Summer Concert Series is over at Malaga Cove now, with Cody Bryant and the Riders of the Purple Sage sending us off with a two hour finale last Wednesday night. This was my first full season of working at the library while the concerts were going on and we certainly had some ups and downs!

This is the first year the library actually changed their hours to accomidate the concerts, shifting Wednesday open hours from the regular 10-5pm to late night hours of 1-9pm. We were able to offer concert goers full library services, show films for the kids in our Community Room and of course, have restrooms available.

Overall the staff had a great time during the concerts and learned a lot about what we will and will NOT be doing again.

The hours have now shifted back to their regular hours: 10am - 5pm Monday thu Saturday.

We hope you all enjoyed the concert series, we thank the Malaga Cove Business & Professional Association for organizing the entire even and hope that a few of you will come back during the year and see us at the Malaga Cove Library

Well, there hasn't been too much action here lately but we're going to get down to business and get some great information out to you all.

First of all I would like to share the scheduled History Discussion Group speakers for the rest of this year. Our very own Kendel Cornwell has done an excellent job of getting great speakers for these events and we encourage anyone to stop by and have a listen.

Movies at Malaga Cove!

If you've been anywhere near the Malaga Cove Library on Wednesday evening you'd hear the concert in the park sponsored by the Malaga Homeowner's Association. During these concerts the library plays movies in the community room for any kids who would rather not sit and listen to the music.

New Hours

On July 1st we changed the hours at both branches and have been pleased with the results so far. The change has allowed us to host more morning story times and early afternoon events plus add 3 additional open hours at each branch. The feedback from patrons has been very good so far with many saying they are happy with the earlier hours.

Malaga Cove:

Monday thru Saturday: 10am to 5pm

Summer time exception: during the Summer Concert series in July and August we alter our Wednesday hours ONLY to 1pm to 9pm. Come down and see us!

Miraleste:

Monday thru Thursday: 11am to 6pm
Friday & Saturday: 10am to 5pm
